| Coastal Muslim from the eastern section of the Archipelago, mainly Bajau (Sama), used the term "Ida'an" (alternatively rendered "Idahan" or "Idaan") to refer to similar, non-Muslim peoples but particularly to those in Sabah.
This term appeared in the journals of early English voyagers to the Borneo coast (see Forrest, 1779:368), and it continued to occur with frequency in reports on northern Borneo into the late 1800's. However, the term "Ida'an" sometimes was not restricted to the Dusun-speaking populations alone, but included in addition the Murut peoples (Low, 1848:343), the Kedayan of Brunei (Keppel, 1846:194-195), and so on. Idahan & Kedayans, 1846

| Biasanya kami berlumba-lumba mengheret pelepah pinang yang baru jatuh.
Batang pelepah ini kemudian kami potong separuh. Hasilnya upih menjadi kereta tarik (bukan kereta sorong), seakan permaidani tarik dalam kisah 1001 malam yang mengasyikkan. AKU OANG DAAT - PART 11 Upih Pinang Pinang merupakan santapan kemestian bagi orang – orang kadayan dewasa di kampung kami, baik lelaki mahupun wanita. Gaya penggunaannya mendekati kepada penggunaan rokok. Ianya sentiasa dimakan di dalam selang masa tertentu, bersama-sama dengan sireh dan kapoo (kapur). Tetapi saya bukan bercakap mengenai wajah pinang yang itu. Kali ini saya menulis mengenai upihnya - upih pinang, upih. Upih merupakan pangkal pelepah daun pinang yang telah tua dan telah gugur ke bumi. Semua tumbuhan pulpa (pulp) mempunyai pelepah, jika tidak taklah dinamakan sebagai pulpa. Namun di antara semua pelepah tumbuh-tumbuhan pulpa, pelepah pinang merupakan yang terbesar dan bermakna. Upih merupakan bahagian pangkal pelepah yang mendakap batang pinang – pelepah berkenaan melekap dan menampung keseluruhan daun pinang. Ia akan terus memegang daun pinang, sehingga menjadi tua dan sampai masa untuk jatuh. Upih berbentuk seakan-akan gubang (perahu). Ia berukuran lebih kurang 4 kaki panjang x 2.5 kaki lebar. Warnanya kuning keperang-perangan atau perang kekuning-kuningan – kedua-dua warna ini pun biasa didapati. Bahagian dalamnya pula berwarna putih dan mempunyai selaput semulajadi yang kalis air. Bahagian ini berfungsi seakan-akan plastik moden. Struktur upih adalah lembut dan agak fleksible untuk dibentur, namun ianya juga liat. Ia mempunyai aroma yang tersendiri, agak menyenangkan menyegarkan, dan bagi kami oang daat yang telah sebati – ia amat menyelerakan kerana sebab tersendiri dan akan saya terangkan nanti. Walaupun lembut upih, ia juga kukuh. Biasanya kami berlumba-lumba mengheret pelepah pinang yang baru jatuh. Batang pelepah ini kemudian kami potong separuh. Hasilnya upih menjadi kereta tarik (bukan kereta sorong), seakan permaidani tarik dalam kisah 1001 malam yang mengasyikkan. Upih boleh menampung 2 – 3 orang kanak-kanak (kami) yang berusia di antara 5 – 10 tahun (pada masa itu) di dalamnya. Riuh rendah jadinya halaman dan bahumah rumah – ayam itik berpakak, bercampur baur dengan hilai ketawa kami, dan jerit pekik sang ibu menyuruh berhati-hati; sehingga suasana menjadi gegak gempita.
Tetapi sebenarnya, kegunaan upih yang paling praktikal ialah untuk membalut makanan dan terutamanya nasi.
Bahagian dalamnya yang yang licin dan kalis air menjadikannya sesuai untuk menjadi pembalut nasi. Nasi jadinya tidak melekit di bahagian dalam dan upih boleh digunapakai berulang kali untuk 2 – 3 bulan, sehingga lusuh.
Tidak semua bahagian akan dibuat upih pembalut. Pertama sekali, bahagian terbaik upih akan dipotong mengikut ukuran segiempat bujur – ukuran nya antara 3 kaki panjang x 2 kaki lebar. Selepas itu bahagian dalamnya akan dikopek dari bahagian luar, hanya bahagian ini yang akan digunakannya, seperti sebidang plastik pembalut yang lebar dan berguna sebagai pembalut. Ia sangat sesuai untuk menjadi pembalut nasi. Seperti yang saya katakan tadi, aroma nasi yang bercampur dengan aroma upih sangat menyelerakan.

A neglected Island of Borneo

| Ellena of Kimanis Borneo 1, 1865 – 1881 In the year of 1865 Borneo was an almost completely neglected island. For several hundred years various European powers had attempted to establish trading posts on its immense coastline.
Nearly all of them had failed. Unfriendly, unfertile it seemed, there were greater riches elsewhere, and Borneo had been passed by. But not completely. On the south coast the Dutch maintained a few animated “keep off” signs, and the British, after failures at Soekadana, Banjermassin, and Balambangan, were in possession of the minute island of Labuan in Brunei Bay1. Apart from Great Britain, the only other European power to enter into a treaty with the decaying and shrinking sultanate of Brunei in North Borneo was the United States of America. There had been American interest in Southeast Asia as early as the close of the revolution; idle privateers had found a market in Amereica for Asian produce, and by 1801 some thirty-four ships came within the year to Canton2. A few years later, American ships were reported busily selling powder to the numerous pirates in the Malacca Straits3, and by the 1830's diplomatic relations with Far Eastern countries were being established. An American visit to Brunei seeking a lease of Labuan coal in 1845 had been fruitless, due largely, said Rajah Brooke, to the drunken servant he loaned as an intrepreter4. End note 1J. Bruni was Bisaya; wild kadayans sacrifice

| Kadayans of Bruni 1, 1912 This is an interesting account in many ways, and tallies very closely with what other evidence would lead one to suspect.
For there is reason to think that Bruni, before it became Mohammedan1, was a Bisaya kingdom under Buddhist sovereigns and Hindu influence; and nearly all the particulars given with regard to the people of Borneo are true of one or other of the races allied to Bisayas and living near Bruni today. The discus−knife, a wooden weapon, is not now in use, but is known to have been used formerly. The wild Kadayans sacrifice after every new moon, and are forbidden to eat a number of things until they have done so. The Malanaus set laden rafts afloat on the rivers to propitiate the spirits of the sea. The very names of the two kinds of cotton, then evidently a novelty to the Chinese, are found in Borneo: KAPOK is a well−known Malay word; but TAYA is the common name for cotton among the Sea Dayaks, though it is doubtful whether it is found in Sumatra at all, and is not given in Marsden's great Dictionary. The use of teeth as ear−ornaments may refer to Kenyahs. If these identities are sufficient to show that Poli was old Bruni, we have an almost unique illustration here of the antiquity of savage customs. That an experience of fourteen hundred years should have failed to convince people of the futility of feeding salt waves is a striking demonstration of the widespread fallacy, that what is old must needs be good. | Brunei in time 5 Just what the 'mighty empire' elements think about Brunei, officially and unofficially , you may wonder.
As a matter of fact, 'The Arrogant One' did NOT hide it feelings toward a dying kingdom that lies in the territory of 'British' Borneo. Bampfylde (1856 – 1918) said Brunei was a mere kingdom “that blot on the map”. Sir Charles Brooke had understood that Brunei was within his 'sphere' and should fall to him. As minuted by G.V. Fiddes (1905) at Colonial Office, Brunei was regarded as a nuisance by the British government, which had no wish to become further involved in its 'squalid' affair. British government in London aims to integrate Brunei into Sarawak, the most healthy and viable State in British Borneo at the time. Note:

Illegals, illegals, & illegals - Sabah

| Sabahans for being patience with the Federal government over the issue of illegal immigrants for many decades are now suffering the consequence of their generosity. There are more illegal immigrants than locals in the state. They have become strangers in their own land. Hantu Laut Majority of Sabah MPs in favour of setting up of Royal Commission of Inquiry rather than setting up of Parliamentary Select Committee. General Malaysian public in Sabah too prefer the former. They do know the different between the two, but may be some Sabah MPs less so. Ironically, it’s MPs from UMNO who seem reluctant to support the formation of RCI. Kadayan Journal
There are topics that I avoid at the moment. One of them is illegal immigrants issue. You probably disagree with my view. But to me, it just waste of thought and writing effort. Should I start writing it and I can live for 100 years from now, I suspect the problem still persists. There are so much empty promises on how to deal with illegal immigrants, yet these people already penetrate the whole system of the State. arimi.ath.cx |

| Sabah in time 5 Jadi, sebuah parti baru yang dinamakan Bersatu Rakyat Jelata Sabah – BERJAYA dilahirkan. Pengumuman mengenainya dibuat semasa Tun berada di luar negara. BERJAYA kemudian melancarkan serangan besar-besaran dan menyeluruh. Ia bagai memuntahkan isi perut yang selama ini tidak kelihatan, yang terpendam jauh di lubuk usus. Hasilnya masyarakat Sabah menjadi 'loya' dengan Tun. Apa isi dakwaan mereka?1 Banyak. Ia bagaimana pun berkisar kepada gaya kepemimpinan dan cara hidup Tun Datu Mustapha, pemimpin Sabah yang dianggap oleh ramai orang sebagai taat beragama, berwibawa dan berkrisma. Berikut merupakan antara isi dakwaan Berjaya yang disiarkan pada 16 Julai, 1975. Tun berkampung di luar negara - Tun hanya meluangkan sekelumit masa di Sabah. Kebanyakan masa dia berada di United Kingdom dan Eropah di mana dia memiliki harta berjuta-juta pound. Tun pilih kasih - Perkhidmatan awam di bawah Tun dicemari dengan pilih kasih. Keinginan dan tujuan segala arahan umum dan arahan kewangan diketepikan untuk mengutamakan nafsu serakah hanya untuk seorang, iaituTun mustapha. Tun diktator - Kepimpinan Tun di dalam USNO adalah dimana tiada seorang di dalam parti yang boleh mengatakan sekalipun kritikan yang paling lembut tanpa bakal menerima padah. Tun hendak membengkrapkan Sabah - Tun berbelanja sewenang-wenangnya sehingga Sabah menjadi hampir bengkrap. Tun menganggap Sabah bukan sebagai sebuah negeri tetapi sebagai harta persendiriannya. Dah ada Gruman, hendakkan Boeing lagi! - Tun membeli dua jet Gruman untuk kegunaan pribadi dan kawan-kawan luar negaranya. Mereka ini dikurniakan pingat walaupun tanpa pernah menjejakkan kaki ke Sabah, sekaligus tanpa sumbangan apa-apa sekalipun kepada negeri ini. Kedua-dua jet ini memerlukan penyelanggaraan berjuta-juta. Tetapi nampaknya tetapi beliau masih belum berpuas hati dengannya dan dalam proses untuk mendapatkan dua lagi kapalterbang boeing 707. Tun hendak keluar dari Malaysia - Tun mendakwa telah membelanjakan lebih seratus juta ringgit wang negeri untuk projek-projek persekutuan tanpa berunding terlebih dahulu. Apabila gagal menuntut pembayaran balik dari kerajaan persekutuan, dia meminta supaya kerajaan negeri dibenarkan meminjam dari luar negara. Kemudian, kerana keinginan ini tidak dipenuhi, beliau kemudian mengugut [untuk membawa Sabah] keluar dari Malaysia. Sehubungan itu, BERJAYA menuntut penjelasan dari mana Tun memperolehi wang berjuta-juta yang telah dibelanjakan untuk membeli istana dan ladang luas di UK, dan istana besar yang dibina di Australia untuk salah seorang teman wanitanya. Kadayan Universe is hereby extending the above greetings of Borneo, to all our readers. This is a festive season for Malaysians in Sarawak and Sabah, complete with festive's elements. For example, it has distinctive festive moods, and positive and negative side of it - including the most common one, minum-minum (drinking session).
Above all, it is also an official holiday for both states.
Harvest festival is not an event that exclusively exist for Dusun people. For example, kadayans also have an event known as “Abis Ngatam” in their traditional calendar. This event shares the common source, that is, marks the completion of paddy harvesting period. Read more (article in bahasa)
Kadayans is also a skillful farmers. As most of us know, that the Kadayans are extremely good in planting "hill paddy" or padi bukit or padi huma. Personally, I consider the Kadayan community is the most spiritual, dedicated and meticulous about paddy planting. Just to remind my fellow cultural and ethnics enthusiasts, Kadayan ethnic together with Bisaya from Kuala Penyu are the only Muslim ethnics that were originally involved in paddy planting just as much as the non Muslim ethnics in the interior (I am hopping somebody can tell me more about this ).
There were two types of paddy plantings, one is padi sawah-wet padi and the other is padi tuggal-hill padi.
Of course different ethnic groups have different padi rituals. I didn’t get a chance to see the Kadayan and Bisaya’s ways of respecting padi in as much as I know about the Kadazan and Dusun’s through my reading.
For the Lundayeh, being my close neighbour whose padi feilds were close to my parent’s I didn’t see either. But what I long most, perhaps I will never to get to see again is the mucang-Kadayan’s word for gontong royong. In my parent’s padi field in those days regardless what ethnics and religion were neighbours all helping each other by turn. They did the mucang every padi season. (Borneo Rainbow)
So, despite of the greeting sound, the celebration of Kaamatan and Gawai actually is not limited to Kadazandusun and Dayak groups. It is a common celebration, open-for-all, even though Muslims are forbidden to enter Unduk Ngadau (Beauty contest).
Well, not all are boleh even though we live in bolehland!

The team found a network of cracks that stretched for more than 10 miles (16km) on Ward Hunt, the area's largest shelf.
The fate of the vast ice blocks is seen as a key indicator of climate change.

One of the expedition's scientists, Derek Mueller of Trent University, Ontario, told me: "I was astonished to see these new cracks.
"It means the ice shelf is disintegrating, the pieces are pinned together like a jigsaw but could float away," Dr Mueller explained. BBC

Sehari selepas penubuhannya diumumkan oleh Datuk Harris, Berjaya mula bertindak. Pada 16 Julai 1975, suratkhabar cina Chinese Daily News dan suratkhabar Daily Express, kedua-duanya dimiliki oleh Timbalan Presiden Berjaya, Datuk Yeh Pao Tsu2 (kemudian dianugerahkan gelaran Tan Sri), telah membuat serangan keras terhadap gaya hidup berfoya-foya dan kehidupan peribadi mewah Tun Mustapha (Sing, 1976).
Kritikan-kritikan ini telah diterbitkan di dalam bahasa Inggeris, Cina, bahasa Melayu dan bahasa Kadazan. Akibatnya, ia merebak kepada ramai penduduk Sabah dan berita-berita ini tersebar dengan meluas. “ ... serangan terbuka seumpamanya yang dituju kepada pemimpin politik tidak pernah berlaku di zaman paska merdeka Sabah (Ibid.)".

Closing JPPS should be easy

| We should not complicate the basic financial management of the State. The Federal budget need to be channeled out directly to the State Government, and let the State government manage them at once. It is direct and simple. Direct, because that is the way it should be. Simple, secause there are about 37,000 state civil servant that are capable of managing the money for the State. It is a real puzzle why JPPS can't be closed. Maybe because JPPS has contributed quite a lot in the development of the State. Maybe because we can't be haste in closing it down. That is what I understood from Datuk Chin's statement. Or, because it isn't necessary for the State to let it go, gave them a monitoring role. As a YB said in the State Assembly. Kajian tentang Kadayan di Brunei
Dahulu (di Negara Brunei Darusalam) ada pulang usaha untuk mengkaji asal dan petempatan oang kadayan di Borneo.
5 tahun yang lepas, Universiti Brunei Darussalam telah berjaya mangungkayahkan satu projek besar-besaran yang melibatkan projek pengumpulan Tradisi Lisan (folklore) masyarakat Kadayan (khususnya di Negara Brunei Darussalam yang terdiri daripada empat daerah) kerana puak kadayan ditemui menghuni di keempat-empat daerah berkenaan.
Boleh dikatakan oang kadayan merupakan golongan majoriti di Brunei.
Ada ura-ura mengatakan projek pengumpulan tradisi lisan seterusnya akan dilaratkan di negara jiran termasuklah Sarawak dan Sabah serta kalimantan. Namun satakat ani balum ada habaanya.
Kalau ku nda silap 4 tahun lapas, Pusat Sejarah Brunei juga telah mengadakan projek pengumpulan sejarah sosio-budaya dan tradisi lisan di 'Perkampungan Sejarah Puak Kadayan di Kg. Jerudong, Brunei Darussalam' yang terbesar setakat ini kerana ia mencakupi semua mukim di daerah Brunei dan Muara, sebahagian tempat di daerah Temburong, Tutong dan Belait.
Mungkin buku hasil perolehan projek akan dikeluarkan tidak lama lagi. Info tentang Kg. Jerudong, dipercayai antara perkampungan asal/awal puak kadayan di Brunei.
Berdasarkan daripada pengamatan saya (terutamanya selepas terlibat secara langsung dengan kedua-dua projek di atas) sebagai pengumpul data dari informan (oang2 tuha kadayan di Boonai), kabanyakannya mangatakan bahawa oang kadayan berasal dari Jawa.
Tidak kurang pula yang mengatakan oang kadayan ani asalnya mungkin daripada puak dusun atau cina (yang memeluk Islam) berdasarkan dari faktor kulit dan muka oang kadayan. Namun, cerita Kadayan daie Jawa hanya ikut-ikutan/akun-akun saja (tanpa bukti yang kukuh).
Namun hasil kajian terkini, Kadayan bukan berasal dari Jawa tetapi dipercayai penduduk asal pulau borneo jua. Kenyataan ini dikuatkan lagi oleh faktor linguistik dengan penduduk yang mendiami wilayah Kalimantan, Indonesia.
Kekerabatan bahasa kadayan dengan penduduk di Banjarmasin dan Kutai tidak boleh dipertikaikan lagi.

Finally, a Sabahan girl, Stacy @ Stracie Angie Anam emerged as the winner of Akademi Fantasia on Astro last night. Come to think of this, Sabahans deserve it after 6 seasons of the reality TV program.

Good enough, as she manage to grab attention from the voters throughout Malaysia to choose her as winner.
I have no doubt at all that Stacy can sing.
Only that, we can never be sure that she really won based on the number of SMSes received. Astro is a cable - TV business monopoly in Malaysia, complete with monopolistic behaviors.
As a matter of fact, Astro is a stingy monopoly. It charges RM10 if you pay late even one day.
Astro service is terrible too. You can't watch all it's outdated programs during even a tiny drop of rain.
Satelite konon. Satelite bangang laa ... , asal hujan saja, langsung tidak boleh tengok.
Let say a minimum monthly fee of RM50 each x 5 millions of Astro available subscribers - every month Astro laugh all the way to bank with RM50 million. Yet, it can't solve the 'rainy day' problem for years.
So, in this "bolehland", AF is just another business for them, in my view. Nobody monitors and examines the SMS result except Astro itself. Also, the result is not being audited by any independent auditors.
Therefore, it can be real, or, it can be just a ploy by Astro based on business calculation. That is, to simply handpick any favorable student with matched commercial values as their new business products for the next 12 months of AF product-cycle.
This sizzling new product gears toward generating as much revenue and profit as possible, before they venture for another season of AF, and asking for more SMSes from the public moron.
Argh, not to mention the bigmouth 'jury' Ogy Ahmad Daud. Not only she is an SRP-dropout, she is a flop singer who really can't sing as well.
Her singing ability is terrible.
Ogy, your pitching gerenti out kalau U nyanyi tinggi sikit le. Prasan pandai!
All these years she is hiding her "ngambayau" voice by carefully pick on songs that lied on the lowest possible key.

Closing JPPS should be easy
"DON'T Be Hasty In Closing Down JPPS”, said LDP Deputy President, Datuk Chin Su Pin (DE 21.05.08). This is strange considering that our PM, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had promised to close it down.
Since this has been promised, the natural thing to do is to make sufficient follow-ups. Unless of course, the state government wants JPPS to stay.

I assume that to this day, there are signs of hesitation of the State Government's part, as far as closing down JPPS is concerned.
I heard similar remarks from government backbenchers during the last State assembly. A YB was saying the government may not necessarily have to close it down.
Instead, he proposed that JPPS be given a different role in the State's development process.
To this day, I still think that JPPS is a misfit in state administrative matters. We don't need JPPS in the first place. We never needed it in the past, now nor even in the future.

About giving JPPS the monitoring roles, deserves the right to as what kind of monitoring activities the YB was talking about. It will turn into a giant monitor, mind you, like Komodo monitor lizard. And do nothing except to monitor.
And who is going to pay this giant monitor, should the transformation ideas materializes, I wonder.
So now we are saying that JPPS had contributed a lot to state development, we love JPPS and we can't afford to govern the State without it.
Fine, but honestly, given the amount of power to control over almost anything that involve federal development allocation in the State that JPPS has, anybody, too, can perform a decent contribution to the world.
When it comes to JPPS, the above arguments are a new kind of reasoning.
Previously, if anybody raised a question as to why JPPS exists, the ever present lame reasoning was that, we need JPPS because Sabah is unique and the situation in Sabah is different from other states.
Different situation needs different solution – so the wise men of the day dictated.
But management is not always associated with being unique. It is also about being uniform. And while Sabah stay being “unique”, the other states stay in uniform. No Jabatan Pembangunan Persekutuan-JPP in all BN-controlled state. No JPP in Pakatan Rakyat states of Kedah, Selangor or Penang.
I believe not all state officials are stupid, and not all a corrupt. I believe the State Government is capable of managing the Government's money. I sincerely believe that closing down JPPS is always a good choice for the State.
JPPS itself, was created in such a haste. The sole reason why JPPS was introduced was because Sabah was in the opposition at the time.
Tell me if there were any preliminary and in-depth studies, cost-benefit analysis, medium and long term impact research prior to its inception following the PBS pullout from BN in 1990.
Creating JPPS was easy. The Federal Government simply assigned a few officers, let them find a modest premise with some furniture.
From there, this [then] tiny department expands to virtually be in control of almost everything that concerns Federal allocation to the extend that even the Chief Minister need to consult it from time to time.
